What you can do to better prepare yourself for surgical treatment

Here are measures you can take before surgery to help optimize your physical and emotional self, and to improve your immune function and ability to heal.

•If you smoke, stop now. Your primary care doctor and Beaumont support staff can assist you with this.
Exercise by walking each day. Your goal should be walking for 20 to 30 continuous minutes daily, if approved by your primary care doctor or cardiologist.
Eat balanced meals and get plenty of rest.
If you take any type of blood thinner medication, stop taking it approximately one week before your surgery.
If you cancer, there are extensive resources available to assist you in improving your physical and emotional health.

The Rose Cancer Center at Beaumont Royal Oak and the Wilson Cancer Center at Beaumont Troy offer these resources. Staff is available to assist all patients.
